Prevention of Udder Inflammation in Cattle, 2025

The project “Prevention of Udder Inflammation in Cattle” was implemented in 2025 in Lipa City, Batangas, South Luzon, Philippines, with the primary goal of strengthening the capacities of local farmers and the National Dairy Authority (NDA) in early detection and prevention of mastitis. The project combined classroom-based training with practical, on-farm exercises, ensuring that all 48 participants gained hands-on experience in testing milk using mastitis detectors, 34 of which were supplied as part of the project. Key activities included:

  • Delivery of mastitis detectors: 34 easy-to-use, mobile detectors were provided to NDA and partially distributed to farmers who can apply them daily in their practice.
  • Training workshops: Practical sessions for NDA staff and farmers focused on effective and timely detection of mastitis, proper udder hygiene, herd management, and data interpretation.
  • Knowledge exchange: Discussions on Czech expertise and technologies in dairy cattle management, milk quality monitoring, and mastitis prevention promoted knowledge transfer and strengthened collaboration between Czech and Filipino experts.
  • Farm-based exercises: Participants applied learned methods directly on dairy farms, testing milk samples and learning how to use mastitis detectors in routine farm management.

The project achieved its objectives by increasing the technical capacities of NDA branches, enhancing the skills of both NDA personnel and farmers, and fostering sustainable practices in milk quality control and udder health management. Positive feedback from participants indicated a high level of satisfaction and the desire to continue similar initiatives.

The initiative also contributed to social inclusion, with approximately 60% of training participants being women actively involved in dairy farming. Environmentally, the project supports sustainable livestock management by reducing the need for curative antibiotic treatments through early detection of mastitis. Economically, the project strengthens local dairy producers by improving milk quality, supporting herd health, and providing practical tools to enhance farm productivity.

Overall, the project laid a solid foundation for the sustainable development of the dairy sector in the Philippines, promoting innovation, capacity building, and collaboration between local stakeholders and Czech experts.
